My son asks me many questions every day. It's time to ask for help. What do you think BOPDs? pic.twitter.com/r5MKqewtmL— TheBOPD's (@msmontilla) March 8, 2016

Sharing our Opinion Thru Email
BOPDs helped Ms Montilla one of her son's many questions. This time it was a question about a gum fight that involved gummy bears, gum drops, gummy worms and chewing gum. Her son asked, "Who would win?" BOPDs shared their opinions and reviewed the qualities of writing an opinion to guide their thinking. At the same time, they also learned about the qualities of writing email. The basics are, addressing the recipient, being clear with your message, including an ending, and signing off with your name. The class was quiet as we used electronic email as our main avenue of communication, and at the same time there were compelling reasons and interesting scenarios presented.
Expressing and Writing Opinions
BOPDs shared their opinions about the most interesting character in the story, "Wonder". As a class we read one piece and in doing so, we pretended to be in a conversation with the author. We noticed that the conversation can sometimes lead to an argument when you express opinions. We noted that while it is important to state your opinion, one must always do so in a respectful manner.
After we had spoken about the purpose of sharing opinions, we delved into the qualities of writing an opinion. There were things that we noticed on the sample and we used those to analyze other opinion pieces. We used the aspects and lay them on a continuum to judge
whether or not it is used in the opinion piece.
To end our learning experience, we wrote a reflection based on our understanding of writing opinions. As one student expressed, " I feel good when I state my opinion
because I can express what's on my mind."
Opinions
BOPDs played game that involved two players who needed to determine whether a statement was an opinion or a fact. It was a fun game and we discovered qualities of each kind of a statement. A fact is true and an opinion might not be true for everyone. A fact can be proven and an opinion can not. Using then what we learned about opinions, we wrote about who we think is the most interesting character in the book, "Wonder". Following the steps of the writing process helped us share our thoughts and next week we will read each other's opinions to start a discussion. The student below gave an excellent beginning to his viewpoint on why Julian Albans is the most interesting character in the book.
