Interpretations and Symbols

BOPDs paired up to analyze symbols on flags. They gained an idea that symbols carry meaning through the infographic investigation we did a few weeks back. In this experience, they revisited that idea. Pairs wrote down their thoughts and interpretations of symbols found on the flag assigned to them. After this, they compared their thoughts and wrote what they noticed about it. To complete the process, pairs researched about the real meanings of the symbols and how it represents the country.

Infographic Interrogation

BOPDs analyzed images from an infographic created by Ferdio and featured in The New York Times. Each group of four had an infographic, and they tried to figure out what it was trying to tell them about flags all over the world. Teams worked non-verbally, striving to scribe their thoughts on paper. To complete the task, Ms Montilla gave groups a secret message inside an envelope containing cut up words, that once arranged correctly, states the message relayed by the image. Teams worked collaboratively to figure out the sentence. Students used punctuation to guide them on sentence structure. Students also asked, "Does it make sense?", "Does it sound right?", and "Does it look right?" to guide them. Once they thought they had a good idea of the sentence, they verified that it matched the image they were analyzing. Tomorrow we will revisit these statements and create our own infographic on flags using the ones that represent each student.

What Flags Represent

To dig deeper about how symbols represent messages, we looked at our flags and its meanings. Each student created a miniature version of the flag from their chosen country. As they were doing this, they were asked to reflect about why they chose that country, how they know what to draw, what they think the symbols mean. How do they connect to their flags?

CSI Philippines

We looked at the history of the Philippine flag to activate our thinking about the Philippines. Some of us shared the connections that we made when we read the text. We then used a thinking routine that we've tried before to share what the Philippines means to us - to share our story with this country we now call home.
