Rules and Applications

BOPDs used MP#8, I can solve new problems by looking for rules and patterns. In this case, they applied the rule of looking for perimeter to help them look for the area of an irregular shape.

Numbers in Many Ways

Guided by MP#4, "I can show my work in many ways",  BOPDs tried solving an elapsed time problem using a number line.  They knew how to compute for the difference by plotting the hours and then the minutes. There were many different ways to show their thinking and they were able to help each other.

Mathematical Claims

BOPDs learned a game that entailed multiplying a number by another two-digit number.  The game was called "Target to 300". The class enjoyed the demonstration of their classmates and was intrigued by the chances of numbers rolled on a die. There were many mathematical claims shared during this process.

The game has two players who take turns rolling the die and scribing a product. The goal is to reach 300.

Math Practices

Students use math practices when solving problems. This team focused on the use of tools to explore math. Using a number line, they showed how they rounded off the number 2203 to the nearest hundreds.
