BOPDs were very excited to welcome the Awesome Emojis to our class for mathlympics! We have used games to learn math concepts and today we decided to design and create our own games using tools around our classroom. Many of us created board games that entailed using the four operations. Some of us shared a game that we learned. To end our time together, we asked the Awesome Emojis to give us feedback about our event. It was fun!

Math Choices
Math Choices help us practice our skills. Our choices range from games, to individual activities, all designed to build proficiency. In this example, students are playing the 'Capture the Hexagons" game which divides a hexagon into equal parts, and the other one is, "Jenga Multiply" where students share products as their build their structure together.
Finding factors
Using a strategy called 1-2-4, we shared our definitions of the word, 'factor'. This helped us when we learned to play the game, "Finding Factors'. We analyzed all aspects of multiplication and discovered many important points. We know that multiplication can be expressed through arrays which are equal groups. We looked at arithmetic patterns of factors and their products. We also learned a prime number only has two factors, itself and one and that this is an illegal move in the game. We tried the game and applied our knowledge and skills in multiplication.
"Circles and Stars" and connections
Ms Montilla joined us in Art with Ms Martina. She asked us if it was possible to connect Mathematics and Art. We tried to find out by doing a number talk and specifically using images to explain our solutions. Connections was the thought for the day.
This worked out well and students were also able to connect the use of numbers on the landscape that they were creating that day. Later on, we played the game called, "Circles and Stars" wherein we established a connection between addition and multiplication. In our reflection we added the connection that we made between multiplication and division.
