In our class we bring books and birthdays together to celebrate birthdays. We started this tradition this week when we listened to a Korean Folk Tale about a red bean porridge. It was a wonderful experience of getting to know our friend's family and culture while celebrating his birthday. When the story ended, we applauded our storytellers and sang, 'Happy Birthday" for our friend in different ways! We look forward to sharing this tradition with everyone in our class.

Traditions
— TheBOPD's (@msmontilla) May 30, 2016Birthday Book Brigade is our tradition of celebrating birthdays in class by listening to a parent read a story, after which we serenade our classmate with the birthday song in as many languages as we know. We will also have advanced celebrations of our classmates' birthday which falls during summer break.
Parents as Partners
We had a great start to our week when a parent shared a story with the class to celebrate his son's birthday. Parents are partners on our learning journey and we appreciate your time, involvement and support. BOPDs enjoyed listening to the story of the tiger and the dried persimmon and found a connection to the culture of our classmate celebrating a birthday.
Birthdays and Stories
A beloved tradition in our classroom is sharing a story when a classmate has a birthday. For this one, the parent of our friend shared a story from a Danish author, one who has written many stories. The story was familiar to the class yet still elicited laughs and sighs.
Of crayons and cricket
We had the pleasure of celebrating two birthdays in one day! That means two wonderful stories shared with us for the occasion. The first one was about crayons eagerly writing postcards to their owner, and the next one was about a kid who discovered his skill in Mathematics through cricket. We are thankful to parents for participating in this class tradition.
Traditions
We were happy to restart our class tradition of celebrating birthdays through stories. We are grateful to have welcomed two families this week to share inspiring stories to the class. One was about overcoming worries by advocating for oneself, and another was transforming a desert into a forest - two themes that have also been on our minds as we start our second semester.

Birthday Book Brigade
One of our classroom traditions is called the Birthday Book Brigade. We put two special things together, books and birthdays, when we celebrate that special day. The parent of the student celebrating comes to read a book to the class and we sing for our classmate in all the languages we know. Every student is also encouraged to share the love of reading by giving a book to our chosen charity. A celebration for everyone!
