Graphs and collaboration

BOPDs integrated literacy with Mathematics when they plotted their goals on a graph. The graph reflects the choices that students made to become better readers. It also tells us where our strengths lie as a class and how we can collaborate to for further understanding.

Assessment and reflection

BOPDs answered a survey that required them to assess themselves on the aspects of reading that we have been learning. At the end of the survey, students reflected about their progress in reading and set goals.

Students worked in pairs  and took turns to reply to the survey. They also helped each other formulate their goal statement and explain the strategy that they will employ. Some pairs found that they needed to improve on the same aspects, and others found it helpful to work with a partner in composing a strategy.

We will work and report on our progress through what we call our, "Prove It" pages - watch out for it on our student blogs!

Two Dogs and a Target

One of the assessment tools that we use is something that we named, "Two Dogs and a Target". The two dogs symbolize something we understand, or something we are successful in doing as the BOPDs. The target symbolizes our next step. It can be something that's still confusing to us, or something we need to aim for improvement.

In this sample, the student acknowledged how he took risks for his learning, and his target to strengthen that skill.

Keywords

BOPDs routinely choose a focus skill for the week that serves as a learning intention. This week we connected it to a keyword that will enable us to meet our goal.
