Lifelong Skills

Today we listened to a passion project about wind energy. The speaker effectively engaged the BOPDs  on a discussion about energy consumption throughout the world, while highlighting the current trends and progress. It was an interesting talk that involved the entire class. We also had the chance to give feedback about his presentation, giving BOPDs the viewpoint of recognizing that communication is a lifelong skill. This talk also showcased real life connections and practical applications of skills that we have been learning. It was a wonderful opportunity for learning and we are grateful to our speaker for this visit.

Ms Montilla's son shared his science experiment with the BOPDs. He showed the substance called, 'oobleck' and how it is both a solid and liquid. After trying to punch it to feel its solid form, we also tried to play with it to test its liquid form.

Math Mystery Flag Message

Inspired by a mystery math message activity, BOPDs applied their problem-solving skill by creating their version. Using research they had encountered flags, they chose a 

tribar-designed flag and use it as the mystery image that would be created should all the equations on the grid were correctly solved. They chose their own flag and then created equations that matched the legend provided.

Artifacts and Meaning

Ms Camile had her last day in our class today. Ms Montilla asked her to bring something that reminds her of the BOPDs. She chose to bring her calligraphy set which she owns and uses. She said that it takes discipline and creativity to create her pieces using the set of tools. She also mentioned that every pen is different and produces unique designs. She said that her calligraphy set made her think of the BOPDs.

BOPDs tried writing their names in calligraphy using our own tools. The purpose and depth of having to write your name in such artistic fashion helped emphasize the connection that Ms Cams made between her pens and the BOPDs - depth not speed, and working hard.

Before the end of our session, BOPDs said their goodbyes and wrote messages to thank Ms Camile for her time with us.

Infographic Interrogation

BOPDs analyzed images from an infographic created by Ferdio and featured in The New York Times. Each group of four had an infographic, and they tried to figure out what it was trying to tell them about flags all over the world. Teams worked non-verbally, striving to scribe their thoughts on paper. To complete the task, Ms Montilla gave groups a secret message inside an envelope containing cut up words, that once arranged correctly, states the message relayed by the image. Teams worked collaboratively to figure out the sentence. Students used punctuation to guide them on sentence structure. Students also asked, "Does it make sense?", "Does it sound right?", and "Does it look right?" to guide them. Once they thought they had a good idea of the sentence, they verified that it matched the image they were analyzing. Tomorrow we will revisit these statements and create our own infographic on flags using the ones that represent each student.
